Manchester United Season 2010/2011 in Pictures

First piece of silverware in first game of season against League Champions Chelsea

Opening game of the BPL Campaign with a comfortably victory over Newcastle

Kicked off Champions League campaign with stalemate against Rangers

Started the season poorly on the road throwing away straightforward victories

Breakthrough performance by Dimitar Berbatov scoring an incredible hat-trick against fierce rivals Liverpool

First away victory in all competitions came in the Champions League in Spain. Chicharito scoring his first UCL goal after a beautiful link-up with Federico Macheda.

Chicharito to the rescue again scoring both goals to secure the first away victory of the season in the BPL for the club.
First of several amazing comebacks of the season securing a point after going down 2-0 at Villa Park 14 minutes before the end.

Wayne Rooney scoring his first goal of the season from the penalty spot against Rangers in the UCL. His relief was evident in his celebration and it was clear he was desperate to prove his commitment to the club.
Undoubtedly one of the great performances of the season. Old Trafford became a fortress as it was difficult for teams to stop Utd at home. Dimitar Berbatov scored an amazing 5 goals and his second hat-trick of the season.

Only three other players have scored 5 goals in a single Premier League game
First defeat in all competitions came against West Ham in the League Cup

United were pitted against Liverpool in the FA Cup third round draw and came away victors with a Ryan Giggs penalty in the first half
Another great performance at Old Trafford with Dimitar scoring his third hat-trick of the season
Another amazing comeback after being 2-0 down at half time at Bloomfield Road. Utd steamrolled over Blackpool in the second half securing all three points.
Add capUndoubtedly the goal of the season. Wonder strike by Wazza against City at Old Trafford re-played for days.
Biggest away victory of the season after struggling away from home all season.

United progressed to the semi-final of the FA Cup after comfortably defeating Arsenal at Old Trafford.

Chicharito with his first brace in the ECL sending Utd through to the Qtr Final
Another amazing comeback after going 2-0 down before halftime yet again and with a special performance from Wayne Rooney who scored his first hat-trick of the season.
Rooney scored the only goal at Stamford Bridge to put united one step closer to the semis of the ECL.
Victory against Chelsea for the second time in a week confirmed Utd's position in the semis of the ECL
 .
Only a brilliant performance from Manuel Neuer stopped Man Utd from scoring at will. This was by far the best away performance in the ECL.

A second string Man Utd romped Schalke to secure their place in the Final of the ECL.

Victory over Chelsea in the third to last game of the season virtually meant Manchester United were closer to the record nineteenth title.

Manchester United secured the Championship with a point at Ewood Park.

Final Game of the season ended in a 4-2 victory over Blackpool. Premier League Champions #19

Man behind the all the success. In SAF we trust.

Mourinho Wins First Trophy in Spain

Jose Mourinho defied the odds to win his first trophy in Spain by guiding his team to victory over the "almighty" Barcelona C.F. in a match which required extra time.

On his first attempt at El Clasico Mourinho lost by a disappointing 5-0. On his second attempt he engineered a draw. On his third attempt he was able to devise a victory in what could be considered the most important El Clasico match so far this season.

I can't help but believe that this is the beginning of the end of Barcelona's dominance over Spanish football. It will only be a matter of time before Mourinho completely turns Spanish Football on it's head like he did in the previous countries in which he managed.

As the semi-final of the Champions League approaches, it will be very interesting to see if Mourinho can repeat his feat of last season by eliminating his rivals.

Rooney's Wonder Goal

The Manchester Derby on February 12, 2011 is a match I will never forget largely as a result of the almost magical goal that was scored by Wayne Rooney to secure victory for Manchester Utd on the day and virtually knocking any title hopes Manchester City were harbouring.

Sir Alex ferguson described the goal scored by Wayne as probably the best goal he has ever seen at Old Trafford and Wayne himself had described it as the best goal he has ever scored in his profession career.

One thing for sure though, Manchester United fans could not stop watching highlights of this goal over the weekend. Pure class.

The Dilemma Continues

Today, while randomly doing a google search to find an up-to-date list of the highest payed players in world football, I inadvertently came across an article in BBC's Sport archives entitled "United's Wage Dilemma", dated July 11, 2000.

The article basically emphasized the fact that Manchester United were finding it somewhat difficult to attract high profile players primarily due to the strict wage structure at the club. Alex Ferguson then at the time admitted that he wanted to sign top players such as the likes of a Luis Figo or Zinedine Zidane, but revealed however that his efforts were hampered by club policy.

The article continued to make the point that while football wages were spiraling out of control, the Old Trafford club was one of the few to keep in check with their increased turnover as the club had the lowest wage/turnover ratio at 33% at the time (up to this current season the club still maintains the lowest wage/turnover ratio in the Premier League at 46%). This was only a year after the Manchester United won the famous treble and during the period where Manchester United were virtually unstoppable in the Premier League. Interestingly also, this was five years before the Glazers purchased the club.

Ten years on, Ferguson continues to reiterate his opinion that the current transfer market is inflated and that the exorbitant wages being offered to players by rival clubs makes it difficult to secure financially sensible deals for top players. Currently, both Manchester City and Chelsea have wage bills that exceed United's and also a few of the most popular clubs outside England including Real Madrid, Barcelona and AC Milan. Not only are wages spiraling out of control, but the transfer fees being payed for players in some instances are absolutely ridiculous.

As we are currently in the middle of the January transfer window, this article is a timely reminder that Manchester United continues to maintain a transfer/wage policy that has kept the club financially stable over the years; a policy which existed long before the Glazers acquired the cub; these are the facts people tend to forget.

It is also comforting to know that despite the fact that the club has to be servicing the debt brought on by the current owners, we can feel confident that Manchester United will be able to meet Uefa's proposed financial fair play rules which will come into effect season 2014-15.

Let the dilemma continue !
